Dog obedience training helps pet owners to set the right standards of behavior for their dogs. Dog obedience schools and programs are widely available in every state in the United States. However most of these dog schools make use of classical conditioning.
A newer, and more innovative, method of training has become available and it is called clicker training. Clicker training is a form of operant conditioning where the dog is trained with a series of small phases, until the animal can associate the correct behavior with its reward. In this method the trainer uses a clicker; this is a plastic device that gives off a clear, metallic sound whenever it is pressed.
The clear, metallic sound is a constant variable that makes the dog focus on what it has just done, and also ensures that the dog creates the association between the action and the reward. The clicker is an essential tool to all clicker trainers, but it is definitely not the only tool that clicker trainers use. Clicker trainers also often use a method known as targeting; this method helps the dog focus on more complex actions, such as running to different targets.
A target stick is used to ‘lure’ or lead the dog so that it inevitably performs the correct behavior. There are two choices when it comes to clicker training your pet: you can either search for a dog school that makes use of operant conditioning, or you can just train your pet at home with a clicker.
